Priddis Log Home New Build

Cabin Fever

MEET THE CLIENTS:

Natasha and Gordon were referred to me through a prior client, whose timberframe home I had worked on. Overall, their goals were the same, but their aesthetic, not so much. Hailing from Australia, Natasha was accustomed to more modern, clean vibes, while Gordon was predisposed towards what could best be described as “manly cabin-in-the-woods bachelor-esque”. Being the smart cookies that they were, they hired an interior designer (yours truly) to help them navigate combining their completely different styles to create the forever home they envisioned for themselves and their two littles.

SCOPE OF THE PROJECT:

Natasha & God required lighting and finishing selections for their substantial 5 bedroom, 4 bathroom new build Priddis Greens Estates acreage log home as well as space plans, a custom cabinetry design package for a family-friendly kitchen, luxury master bath, large laundry, mudroom and 3 more bathrooms and closets. We paid homage to the traditional nature of their log home by using natural materials for the most part, mixing in some more contemporary pieces to suit Natasha’s style.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS:

We start every project by interviewing our clients extensively. We want to know how our clients desire to live, what they want from their home in terms of usage, who needs to use each space and an inventory (particularly kitchens and closets) of what will need to be used and stored. In short, we want to know how we can make their home experience easier, more functional and of course – more beautiful!

Kitchen

Gord and Natasha liked to cook together and as a family, most of their meals were eaten together in the kitchen. We designed their 375+ sq ft custom kitchen based on our interviews, tailoring the layout and cabinetry design specifically to them. For example, we knew that Gord was of taller than average height and that he liked to wear clogs when at home. This translated into a slightly higher 37” counter height and a toe kick that would allow for his favourite footwear. In addition, we:

  • Created separate family & entertaining “zones” to keep traffic in the main work aisle free by locating the fridge, child-friendly microwave drawer, coffee station and wrap around wine bar at the entrance to the kitchen.

  • We placed a curved eating bar on the exterior side of the island and flanked it with a cabinet on either side to house daily-use dishes.

  • We planned a sizable walk-in butler’s pantry for their many small appliances and all the supplies a growing family requires.

  • Specified a blend of natural materials suited to the natural earthiness of log homes. Exotic stone countertops, copper sinks and knotty alder cabinetry added warmth and charm.

Principal Ensuite

Natasha wanted the principal ensuite to feel welcoming for Gord of course, but brighter and more feminine than many areas of the house. She asked for a double vanity with lots of drawer space, a shower design that would accommodate her two young sons when necessary and a freestanding soaker tub for her.

  • We designed a custom tiled travertine & marble family shower the size of a small splash park (I jest). With jets for aching muscles, a rainhead shower and practical handheld for rinsing down tile and little bodies alike, it checked all of the boxes for both Natasha and Gord.

  • Natasha’s soaker tub was placed between the shower and exterior wall of the bathroom, angled towards the window to take advantage of tree and sky views. Behind the floor mount tub filler, we left enough room for a rustic towel ladder and accent table because…wine.
  • We repeated the knotty alder from the main floor, this time choosing a lighter quartz crema countertop for easy maintenance.
  • The travertine of the shower was repeated in larger format on the floor, lending an airy feel to the ensuite.

The Mud Room/Laundry

We designed an unusually large laundry-mudroom combo for Natasha & Gord. It needed to be a multipurpose space with room for doing laundry (of course), cleaning up from time outdoors, a spot for their large dog Sydney to hang when alone and required ample storage for these avid skiers to dry and put away their gear.

  • The foundation of this space is a heated slate tile floor and enough knotty alder lockers and drawers to make a lumberjack’s heart skip a beat. A place for everything and everything in its place, right down to wayward brooms and all the ski gear a family of four would ever need.

  • In here, we added pull out storage for large dog food bins and the sundry items required for pet care and the Dutch door Natasha wanted for Sydney was added so he could keep an eye on things without disturbing guests.

  • Although we kept to natural stone countertops throughout the home, the leathered granite in the laundry room is a personal favourite and adds a subtle texture we adore.

Remainder of the Home

  • We made selections for lighting, tile, hardware, flooring, cabinetry, trim etc. in collaboration with the homeowners.

  • We designed bathroom cabinetry, custom showers and closet spaces for the entire home including the Principal Ensuite
