Improving Over Moving: A Timeless Renovation
MEET THE CLIENTS:
With their nest now empty, Heather and Mike decided it was high time for a home facelift. Nestled amidst stunning ravine views, their 20-year-old home had lost its sparkle and functionality. Instead of packing up, they opted to renovate, enlisting Room Service Interiors to improve the design and style of their main floor.
SCOPE OF THE PROJECT:
In the great room, the living space was dominated by an off-centre fireplace and deep shelving. The mission? A complete gut to make room for a kitchen revamp primed for family feasts and entertaining, a great room reconfiguration, and a main floor refresh of the walls, flooring and lighting throughout. The ultimate goal was a functional floor space, top notch efficiency and spaces that were both stylish and inviting.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS:
Kitchen
With its orange hued maple cabinetry, busy backsplash and dark granite countertops, the kitchen felt outdated. The raised eating bar on the island limited the meal prep surface and seated a maximum of two. In addition, the range and sink lacked sufficient space between them to accommodate two cooks and an over-the-range microwave ventilation combo was insufficient and noisy. Our clients wished for a kitchen that could accommodate family gatherings and radiated the same warmth as the family themselves.
Revamping the kitchen layout involved ditching the old pantry and widening work aisles, instantly creating an airy, spacious vibe. To keep it light and bright, we used Benjamin Moore White Dove for the cabinets and sleek rift-cut white oak for the island and open shelving. For discreet convenience, we tucked an under-counter microwave large enough for cooking additional dishes during the holidays into the base cabinets. In its place, we installed a custom rift cut white oak range hood with a whisper quiet Falmec ventilation insert. We opted for drawers over cupboards, including sleek lemans pullouts for easy access to every corner.
A generous island was added to comfortably seat six, complete with a pop-up charger, dishwasher, and smart storage solutions like pull-out recycling and waste bins. Our choice of polished Calacatta Gold Silestone quartz countertops adds a touch of luxury, while a simple subway tile backsplash lets stunning hand-stamped Jeffrey Court marble tiles steal the show. Clear glass lighting fixtures add important task lighting and add a final touch of elegance, casting a warm glow over the island, making the kitchen a truly inviting space.
And the pièce de résistance? The new pantry boasts ample counter space for small appliances, pull-out baskets for produce, and drawers for snacks and as well as spice racks on the inside of each door convenience.
Great Room
In the great room, the living space was dominated by an off-center fireplace and a bulky TV cubby, alongside recessed shelving that overwhelmed the room. Recognizing the potential for a more harmonious design, we proposed a renovation that would bring balance to the feature wall.
Our vision was clear: remove the old fireplace and dark porcelain tile, reconfiguring the wall for a centered fireplace that would become the room’s focal point. The new design allowed for a TV above the fireplace, complemented by a lower, smaller mantel and built-in cabinetry on either side for a seamless look. We chose a classic white and grey veined porcelain tile for the surround and polished marble in a herringbone pattern for the hearth, adding a touch of timeless elegance.
Main Floor
The main floor received a fresh update with clean flat baseboards and trim in White Dove, while the mantel, interior doors and stair railing were painted in the contrasting tones of Iron Mountain. We added LVP, mimicking rustic oak, offers both character and pet-friendly durability, complemented by luxurious carpeting for a blend of comfort and style.
This comprehensive transformation was not just about aesthetics but creating spaces that reflected our clients’ desires for a home that blends functionality with timeless elegance. Every choice, from the fireplace’s redesign to the kitchen’s meticulous details, was made with our clients’ dreams at the forefront, turning their house into a home where memories are made and cherished.
