Scope of Project:

 

Downsizing and creating a more relaxed, lower maintenance lifestyle for Ken and Frances was the motivation behind resettling in Bragg Creek.  They had purchased a lot with an existing cabin and hired an architect to create initial plans as well as a general contractor.  Although off to a good start, they needed help pulling their ideas together, weeding out the trendy to arrive at a home and aesthetic that would have longevity, with every detail thoughtfully curated.  After many discussions and a review of the architectural drawings, Room Service Interiors was tasked with designing a kitchen that could accommodate large family gatherings and reconfiguring some of the main spaces to improve the function of the main floor.  Finally, we chose each of the finishes and fixtures for the interior and exterior of their home (over one hundred in total).

Here’s the highlights of the project:

Ken and Frances’ personal style leaned towards the traditional, but they didn’t want their home to feel “too precious”.  Livable, welcoming, timeless... with a large dash of European farmhouse.  That was the ultimate goal. Inspired by their love for travel and Italy, we incorporated European influences to fulfill their dream home.

One of Ken & Frances’ musts for their new home was a kitchen that, even though pared down from their last home, would still accommodate large gatherings for friends and family alike.   We added a wider work aisle to the plan to enable more than one cook to move about freely as well as extra seating in an L-shape at the end of the island to create an engaging conversation area.

With most of the major elements of the kitchen on one wall, both storage for dishes and prep space were minimal.  We elongated and widened the design of the island to craft a customized work centre on one side and added pretty glass cabinets to house practical dish storage on the other side. Finally, we designed the height of the wall cabinets to add critical storage and take advantage of the height allowed us from the vaulted ceilings.  An integrated fridge and dishwasher with matching cabinetry panels ensure that although beautiful, that the star of the show remains the black Bertazzoni gas range with custom hood, marble inlay and polished nickel pot filler.

*Hint: we always start any kitchen design with a substantial interview process that includes a questionnaire outlining how our clients want to use their space, what appliances they prefer, who and how many chefs in the kitchen and what specifically they need to store along with their preferred storage method.

Additional Highlights:

When we first came to this project, the pantry was designed to tuck in behind the kitchen wall, but the space was uncomfortably narrow and dark.  Redesigned to face the hallway, the large wall pantry is now a chef's dream, offering both ample storage and counter space with two sets of double doors accented by full height matte black cremone bolts. 

In true European farmhouse style, the over-grouted stone fireplace in the living room serves as a natural focal point and gathering place, exuding a sense of warmth and comfort. Flanked by custom cabinets housing everything from games and books to china, it is a perfect space for cozy nights in with family and friends.

The primary bedroom should serve as an escape from the world, so we treated it as such with a unique flair all its own. With bold green Benjamin Moore paint – the panelled feature wall is an instant attention grabber with a gentle nod to tradition.

We blended existing and refurbished along with custom furnishings to develop a collected-over-time aesthetic. Although there is no shortage of colour with it’s various hues of blue and green, this new-home build achieves a sense of warmth and harmony by using neutral textiles and texture, vintage décor, natural wood, stone, and tile.
